Body Fat, Obesity and Physical Factors

While many obese people may be leading their lives free of major medical issues, many others suffer from chronic conditions that eventually require medical treatment.

For example, Marlene has frequent back pain that keeps her awake at night. If she has to sit still for more than an hour, walk more than a couple of blocks, stand in line for a long time, or drive long distances, her back pain gets worse.

Marlene, who weighs over 300 pounds, accepts that her back hurts because of her weight. She knows that her back would probably feel better if she could lose the excess body fat. But she is embarrassed to talk to her doctor about her back problems because she fears that he will lecture her about eating and exercising.

So Marlene endures the back problems. Eventually, she may lose the ability to bend over, keep a full time job or even walk. She tries not to think about those things.

Sandra and her husband have been trying to have a baby for five years. Sandra, who is 65 pounds overweight, read that obesity might lead to infertility or difficulty conceiving. Like Marlene, she dares not mention her fertility issues to her doctor. He attributes everything to her body fat problem.

Running on Empty

Joe has been more than 100 pounds overweight for almost twenty years. He can't remember the last time he was able to run.

Now Joe can't play baseball with his son. He can't shoot baskets, race to the beach or ride dirt bikes. When he sits in the bleachers, he has to bring a large seat cushion and even then he has to get up and walk around every twenty minutes. Joe can't bring himself to tell his son why he can't always go to see him pitch. Sometimes, he's just too tired.

Discomfort Isn't a Medical Problem

Most obese people suffer more than others from summer heat. We also develop osteoarthritis sooner and the pressure on our joints can be intense when we walk. Getting up from chairs and couches can be very difficult with weak joints and extra pounds of body fat.

Remember, many people assume that fat people deserve their discomfort. We don't carry signs that explain our slow metabolism, defective thyroids or genetic history. We must endure in silence in a world where obesity is equated with gluttony and laziness.

I've been ill and obese for over 20yrs now, been to every type of doctor and specialist to try and find an answer to the weight and ill health. I am not a lazy person at all, my personality is towards being positive and cheerful [until I'm ripped apart by insensitive and ignorant people - including the so called 'Professionals']. I am not 'out of control' with my eating habits, I do not sit all day stuffing myself with all the wrong foods. I used to be a hairdresser, worked out at the gym 3x's a week, played squash & tennis, went swimming and even did horse-riding, ballet and ice-skating earlier in my life -- then suddenly I slowly began to feel very unwell, my lifestyle began to change, my social life dropped to almost nothing, I eventually became housebound, classed as semi-invalid, and sick and obese. I spent 20yrs of my life and thousands on medical professionals who hardly had a clue what was wrong with me and why I was piling on weight. But gradually, over the yrs, I've been diagnosed with auto-immune diseases, hypothyroidism [I have no thyroid at all - took the DR's 15yrs to find that out after yrs of telling me my thyroid was normal!!], diagnosed with hashimoto, Lupus, Spondylitis, oedema, and 2 days ago had a new test done called EIS, found I have DHEA problems and very low dopamine. As well as other health issues, DHEA causes over-weight problems and you have difficulty losing weight, it makes you sluggish and extremely tired all the time. I have now begun treatment to normalize this and have been told that I will begin to lose weight and feel so much better. I was treated with so much respect and warmth by these people [who did the test] my soul soaked it up like a dry sponge - it was so wonderful and refreshing! Obese people are treated like freaks and aliens, they are often ostracized [disliked, hated, out of favour, not accepted, detested etc], discriminated against, judged negatively and spitefully, shunned, treated with deliberate coldness and contempt, unwelcome in most social circles, are often not catered for in any area of seating and eating places, in restrooms/bathrooms, in forms of travel, in their clothing needs. They are criticised, pulled apart by jokes, sarcasm, sniggering, snubs, and snobs. Often humiliated and insulted by others – all the ones that have never [or almost never] had health or weight issues in their own lives. These same people would rather save a fish from distinction then reach out a compassionate hand to another hurting human being [they cannot grasp that ‘COMPASSION’ goes faaaaaaaar beyond their own personal likes and dislikes!!], they are rude, ill-mannered, inconsiderate, selfish, ignorant and badly-informed people, who take their views from the negative and often false reports on obese people from what they see, read and hear thru the media, including movies who make overweight people a butt of their sick jokes and mockery!! Its not the obese who are the real ugly ones in this world, it’s the ones who think they are above them and far better then them. Obese people maybe ugly on the outside, but you who mock them and make no attempt to hide your disgust – are ugly on the inside!!
